This massive oversupply with decreasing demand resulted in multiple distillery closures and a general decline in the sale of scotch whisky. The period was known as The Whisky Loch. Big Peat Thropaigeach is a 48% ABV Islay blended malt which has been finished in ex-Rum casks to impart a tropical influence. The striking bottle features a screen-printed design that features Big Peat (the brand’s Ileach Fisherman mascot) dressed as a pirate, representing the use of Caribbean rum casks in the whisky maturation.

Second go after some breathing, one hour and a half later, from the very same glass (no refill!): the nose gets quite similar to a very old Sauternes or a Sélection de Grains Nobles (by Zind-Humbrecht, no need to say). This new single malt scotch whisky was distilled from lightly peated barley. The spirit was then divided into Pedro Ximénez sherry casks (9 years) and Jamaican rum casks (10 years). 34) and a Tomintoul 55 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (Release No.36). The resulting single malt is lively with a hint of smoke.

Gohar, who uses food as her creative medium, crafted a 200-inch long birthday cake for the distillery, slices of which were served alongside The Glenlivet Rum and Bourbon Fusion Cask Selection. The cake, which was the centerpiece of the event, was a vanilla sponge filled with scotch-infused apricot and peach jam.

The whisky was also matured in “a three-cask finish of bold provenance”, with the liquid divided tin three different types of casks for finishing: Bordeaux wine, Calvados, and Guatemalan rum. The Midnight Malt is a single malt scotch whisky matured in first-fill oloroso sherry and American oak casks for three decades.

The Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask Whisky is transferred into ex-rum casks. The cask used for finishing will usually have previously held a different type of spirit, wine, or other liquid. Sherry casks are the most common, but there are plenty of examples of other cask varieties being used.
