First, a little bit of breaking Midwestern beer news this afternoon: Minneapolis’ Fair State Brewing Cooperative just announced that they had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. “This does not mean we are shutting down,” according to CEO Evan Sallee in a post on their website. “[W]e are just restructuring our debt and will emerge on the other side stronger for it.” Let’s hope so.

Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced a hike in the excise duty on alcohol in his budget speech at the state assembly. This is the second time in seven months that the state government of Karnataka has opted to raise duty on beer. This move is expected to make liquor prices costlier in Karnataka. The CM in his budget speech also informed that 50 cafe hotels, run entirely by women, would be set up across the state at a cost of Rs 7.5 crore.

BrewDog has moved into the tequila category with the launching of Casa Rayos. BrewDog produces Casa Rayos in collaboration with the Orendain family, which is said to be the third-oldest tequila-distilling family in the Mexican town of Tequila.
