This was the year people made Martinis their whole personality, 1970s basements suddenly became fashionable and “cocaine chic” was the dominant wine-bar aesthetic. Which trends have what it takes to stick it out through the new year?
We’re always on the lookout for home-friendly cocktail recipes to share on imbibemagazine.com. But looking back at 2023, we discovered that the most popular recipes on the site were classic cocktails and familiar favorites from the year before. In 2022, a tropical classic came in at #5 on the list, but in 2023, that same recipe seized the top spot, pushing last year’s #1 Negroni Sbagliato to #2.
The sweet and nutty whiskey that we all know (and love!) makes the perfect base for holiday libations. While it is delicious on its own, here are 3 festive cocktails from Skrewball Whiskey that make the most of the O.G. PB liquor! For a hot cocoa with a kick: Whiskey The Skrew-Dolph Ingredients 1 ¾ oz. Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey ¼ oz. Peppermint Schnapps 4 ½ oz.
It’s that time of year already! While alcohol consumption is up during the holidays, it may be time to rethink your relationship with alcohol for the month of Dry January. Photo by Neha Deshmukh via Unsplash What the heck is “Dry January,” you ask? For some people (such as regular drinkers who maybe partied a little too hard in December), it’s abstaining from alcohol through the entire month of January in order to reset.

If you compiled all of the headlines covering craft beer over the past 12 months and gave your summation on the state of the industry, you might grumble something about a Bob Dylan song in between sips of your Flavortown spiked fruit punch. And, you wouldn’t be wrong (unless, of course, you crushed a can of said hard juice and celebrated by yelling “whiz bang wow”).
As a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee living in Haywood County in the North Carolina mountains just west of Asheville, Morgan Owle-Crisp long held caution around beer. “Many people in my culture are not proponents of alcohol,” she explains. “Liquor was historically used to manipulate Native people into contracts and negotiations when they were not of sound mind.
The Szechuan Flower, AKA “Buzz Button,” gets its nickname due to the intense tingly sensation that occurs in your mouth when consuming it. The small leafy plant is used in cooking and mixology for its incredible ability to elevate the taste of a dish or a drink. Condado Ocean Club is the only adults-only hotel located on the beach across the island of San Juan and it’s signature indoor-outdoor eatery, SOCIAL, has recently added a cocktail to their menu using this unusual ingredient.

Ever since news of the Ramova Theater renovation started circulating a few years ago, a brewery has been a part of that discussion. In October, we learned that the brewery being built into the Ramova project in Bridgeport wasn’t going to be an independent upstart as many expected. It would, in fact, be the first midwestern outpost for Brooklyn-based Other Half Brewing , the brewery famous for their wide variety of dry-hopped IPAs and becoming, as one Punch piece put it, “the official
I would happily accept a glass of bubbles any day of the year, but the unwritten rule of New Year’s Eve is that Champagne must be hoisted aloft at some point. However, I’m also game to buck tradition with an unexpected bottle, and the Session Sparkling Wine from Living Roots delivers both cheer and charm. Living Roots is a trans-global creation , founded in 2016 by husband and wife Sebastian and Colleen Hardy.

If someone asked you to name a nation famous for its tea, you probably wouldn’t start with Vietnam. Yet every year, smugglers move thousands of pounds of quality Vietnamese teas into China and Taiwan, where they fetch top dollar as relabeled lots from those more renowned regions. Tea educator Anna Ye wanted the world to recognize Vietnam for its own contributions to the tea canon, rather than counterfeit commodities sold under the table.
If you were to rate the beer styles available in each season, you’d have a tough time beating the choices released in fall and winter. While the warmer months are dominated by IPAs, pale ales, lagers, pilsners, wheat beers, and other lighter brews crafted for their refreshing, easy-drinking nature, the winter is a time to get maltier, bolder, and up the alcohol content as well as the flavor.
The 13 years of national Prohibition aren’t usually associated with high-quality spirits. Bootlegged and diluted whiskey, bathtub gin, and backwoods moonshine were indeed all consumed in great quantities in the era’s underground bars and speakeasies. But a lesser-known reality of Prohibition was that it was possible to legally acquire well-aged, bottled-in-bond bourbon and rye.
New Hampshire’s Tamworth Distilling, the company behind graveyard tree-sap infused rye , crab whiskey , and a famed venison-flavored whiskey , is back with yet another novelty, this time a brandy, infused with the flavor of smoked trout. Or, more accurately, a trout distillate flavored with apple brandy. No typo. The 2023 Food & Wine Drinks Innovator of the Year didn’t go far for the inspiration behind his newest innovation.
“I love accessible wine lists,” says Lauren Hoey, wine director at New York’s Jupiter , about one of her main considerations when assembling a wine program. “I, myself, am driven by value when I go out to buy, and I want to be able to offer that to everyone else.” New York’s Midtown may not be the first place that you’d think “value,” but at the Rockefeller Center–area follow-up to King , the beloved SoHo restaurant from chefs Jess Shadbolt and Clare de Boer, and beverage director Annie Shi, Hoe
As gloriously depicted in films like Miracle on 34th Street and Elf, New York City is a wonderous time during the holiday season. Whether you’re a far-away tourist or Big Apple local, there’s a plentiful array of jolly options to celebrate, and with a drink in hand. Here’s some of the most unique places to get together with friends, family, or go for a solo drink around the city that never sleeps.
As with any exceptional wines and spirits one has over the course of a lifetime, the best beers should linger long after the last sip, lip smack, and smile. They might conjure a specific moment in time, or a specific place or person. They might tell a compelling story or carry a powerful message. They might or might not be flavored with rocket pops.
Wolves Whiskey hit the scene in 2019 with both an unexpected mission and a surprising fanfare. Founded by two footwear magnates and leaning on the distilling prowess of Charbay ‘s Marko Karakasevic, the outfit drew a lot of its playbook from Charbay’s longtime program of making whiskey out of beer. Things have since exploded for the brand — which has released more than a dozen expressions in just a few years on the market.
A retirement home dining room isn’t the usual starting point for a wine career, but for Ron Acierto, wine and beverage director at ōkta in McMinnville, Oregon, the unlikely fine-dining ethos in this establishment piqued his interest. The retirement home gig came shortly after Acierto emigrated from the Philippines to the U.S. at age 15, and from there, he found a home in the world of hospitality.
Nothing says celebration quite like a glass of Champagne. With its vivacious bubbles, the French sparkler brings a bit of cheer everywhere it goes. But given the effort it takes to produce a high-quality bottle, Champagne prices can run high, meaning some may be hesitant to pour their sparkling investment into a glass full of other ingredients. While it is true that the bubbles hold up more than fine on their own, Champagne cocktails can really take the wine to new heights.
Remember WhistlePig’s PiggyBank Rye , which comes in a glass, pig-shaped decanter that is poured from its rear end? Well now it’s an annual thing. You can tell the difference between the 2022 vintage and the 2023 one by the color of the wax on the stopper. 2022’s is red. 2023 is gold. The label and paint are slightly more yellow, also.
Consulate generals don’t regularly ask brewers to speak at foreign embassies. But last year, Ayla Kapahi, the director of operations for Borderlands Brewing in Tucson, Arizona, traveled to the U.S. embassy in Nogales, Mexico, to discuss Las Hermanas (“the sisters”), her project that unites Mexican and American female brewers to brew a collaborative beer, sharpen technical skill sets, and broaden cultural apertures.

Two years ago almost to the day, I published a big report here at VinePair on the sobering state of the American craft brewing industry, which was then grappling with pandemic-tangled supply chains, confronted by a surging spirits sector, and still reeling from the fallout of Brienne Allan’s airing of grievances of workplace harassment (and worse) on behalf of the industry’s marginalized workers.
Old Dickel whiskey has become a regular occurrence in recent years, with ages of 13 , 15 , and 17 years old hitting the market. Now Dickel’s one-upping itself with an even older expression at 18 years old. It’s important to note that this is marketed as an extension to its Bourbon line — not its Tennessee Whiskeys — which began with Dickel Bourbon 8 Years Old.

This year was a rollercoaster for the wine industry. Natural disasters obliterated vineyards, large companies experienced major turnover, and scammers perpetuated distrust in wine retailers. But even as producers faced one of the most devastating harvests in recent history and drinking data continuously suggested that the industry was in decline, winemakers pushed through and looked toward the future.
