I’ve never completed a Dry January. In truth, I haven’t tried. I admire people who use the 11-year old tradition with roots in 1942 Finland’s wartime rations as an opportunity to examine their health and habits. Self-reflection is always a great idea! But everyone’s relationship with alcohol is different, and, for me, moderation is key all year long.

Despite a long-standing bourbon affinity, my inaugural Kentucky bourbon tour only occurred this past November by interloping on my friend Kate Snow’s vacation plans to do the same. With a few more travelers, our eventual group of 10 represented the extreme points across the booze spectrum from “I only drink beer” to “I detect a high-rye mashbill.” Our trip was equal parts advanced planning and winging it once we arrived; the formula worked out for us.

What is the most quintessential American holiday beverage? Eggnog, hands down. This delicious and creamy spiced beverage is notorious for its ability to hide high-proof alcohol quite well. But, what if we told you there’s another contender in town that’s even spicier (and friendlier to our dairy-free friends?) Its name is Coquito. Coquito is Puerto Rico’s symbol of holiday celebration.

What’s going to be the new “it” cocktail for 2024? While we can’t know with 100 percent certainty, we’ve already made some educated guesses — hello, Carajillo — and that’s what makes things fun. Even bartenders don’t know what the next status cocktail may be, but they treat speculation a little differently than most. Each new year brings a renewed possibility that a build they love may capture the imagination of the masses.

The Hot Toddy is, at its core, straightforward: It consists of liquor, water or tea, sugar, and spices. And while its history has a number of origin stories — and a number of liquors involved — we know a few things to be true: It’s often cited and used as a cold remedy, both in reference to illness and weather. It’s been around since the 1700s, and is now served in bars and cocktail lounges all over the globe.

California’s Foley Family Wines recently branched out into spirits, and while its gin isn’t a big risk, launching a Texas whiskey certainly is. Made from Texas-grown corn, the high-rye (35%) bourbon is aged in-state in new charred oak barrels for 6 years before bottling… in California. Ouch! Will the perennially Texas proud accept a Texas bourbon that goes into bottle on the west coast?
