In the Middle Ages, European Beer Was Hallucinogenic

VinePair

People have been enjoying beer for thousands of years, with the earliest brews believed to have been used for sustenance rather than intoxication at the dawn of the agricultural age. By the medieval era, beer (or ale, as it was commonly called) was widely drunk by all social classes in place of water, as it was believed to be a more nutritious — and psychedelic — alternative.

Review: 2021 Tornatore Pietrarizzo Etna Bianco DOC

Drinkhacker

A point of clarity. Tornatore’s Pietrarizzo Etna Bianco is not the same thing as this wine , which is bottled only under its DOC identification of Etna Bianco. The main difference (by my reading) is that Pietrarizzo spends two extra months on the lees before bottling — and in oak barrels instead of stainless steel. Details are a little hard to suss out, this being a Sicilian wine and all — even though the brand is now owned by the American Gallo empire.
