What is a New York Sour ? In layman’s terms, it’s a Whiskey Sour with a red wine float — but it’s also so much more than that. Oddly enough, the New York Sour (a.k.a. the Continental Sour, the Southern Sour, and the Brunswick Sour) was believed to be invented in Chicago in the late 1800s. After numerous recipe tweaks and a fall into relative obscurity by the mid- to late 1900s, the drink was rediscovered during the second wave of the modern cocktail renaissance in the early 2010s.

The origins of Emilio Lustau S.A. date back to 1896, when Mr. José Ruiz-Berdejo, a secretary to the Court of Justice, started cultivating the vines of the family’s state, named Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza, in his spare time. In these humble beginnings he made wines which were then sold on to larger Sherry producers. This activity was known as being an almacenista or stockeeper.

For the past couple of years, we’ve made holiday eggnogs. First there was a Black Walnut Brandy Rum Manhattan eggnog. Then there was a Cynar Boulevardier eggnog. Both of these were built on the notion that you can take most stirred-and-boozy cocktails, especially those with aged spirits, and convert them into an eggnog. Founded by husband and wife team, Scott Blackwell and Ann Marshall, High Wire was born of a desire to introduce small batch, craft spirits to South Carolina. A lifelong “serial entrepreneur,” Scott sold his former business, a natural and organic bakery called Immaculate Baking Company, to General Mills. The couple quickly began developing business plans for a distillery, an endeavor that allowed them to combine their passion for small business with their love of high quality artisan spirits.
