Both of this week’s drinks are honey-laced Daiquiri variations that take the core three-ingredient formula — rum, lime, and sugar — and move it in a more tiki-ish direction by layering multiple sweeteners and adding a spice/intense flavor element. You can, of course, use any rum you want.

And what makes it pretty cool (and different from most tiki-style drinks) is that it features a bitter aperitif, Campari. So, hats off to Aviary’s bartender at the time, Jeffrey Ong, who came up with the genius idea of mixing Campari into his tiki drink. And who doesn’t love Campari? And the name?

So before the summer closed, I felt compelled to write about the Tradewinds, a devastatingly delicious tiki-ish drink that combines coconut cream and apricot liqueur. Planter’s Punch Out Tiki drinks often look quite complex on the page. Indeed, I am almost embarrassed by how much I enjoy this drink.

There are a range of specs online, but all of them trend in the same direction: gin, apricot, lime, Peychaud’s bitters, perhaps a bit of added sweetener. That’s tiki time. On the other hand, with its lime and apricot, this drink bears more than a little resemblance to a tiki drink. The cycle repeats.
