For years, much of American cocktailculture treated rum as little more than a summertime spirit or a match for Coke and ginger beer. It has a medium body and tasting notes of dark chocolate, spices, and bitter orange. But thankfully, those days are behind us, and the U.S. is embracing rums in every facet.
It was the height of the jet age as well, and tikiculture was soaring. Of course, what we’ve also learned from the era of the extra Martini, unicorn latte, and increasingly absurdist Bloody Mary is that there are also times in history when we drinkers explicitly reject serious cocktailculture.
There are spirits and then theres spirit, and El Guapo embodies bothin no small part because the leader of the brand, Christa Cotton, came of age in a craft cocktailculture ripe with creativity.
