In partnership with BlockBar, Glenfiddich Distillery is releasing a rare 1985 cask bottling, with just 150 bottles estimated to be yielded from the cask. It almost feels like your whisky collection is incomplete without a bottle of The Macallan 12 Year Old at some point. Both bottles sell very well, but for slightly different reasons. We could sit here and tell you all about the shiniest and most expensive bottles at auction, and we will, of course, do that. But our main aim with this, now monthly, article is to highlight our picks.
In the 1980s, The Macallan released two limited edition bottlings commissioned by British Aerospace plc (now BAE Systems ) featuring the twin turboprop aircraft, Jetstream 31. As far as I can see, there is no record of why this collaboration came about, the exact year of bottling, or the original retail price.
With around 300 special-edition Blue Label bottlings, the brand frequently collaborates with artists and designers to create unique, limited-edition releases. These designs, featuring striking artwork, range from limited runs of 100 bottles to larger collections, making Blue Label a coveted collector’s item.

Although the bottles were marketed as ‘Anniversary Malts’, they were not actually bottled for the anniversary of anything. Inside the matte black bottle is a high-strength, sherry cask-finished beauty of a liquid that can compete with the biggest, oldest, and most expensive blends in the world. Utilizing stocks of malt and grain that Duncan Taylor matured over a few decades, this is one of the bottles of whisky that we should all have on our shelves.
Unlike blended expressions, single cask bottlings showcase the distinct influence of an individual cask, providing an unfiltered view into the whisky’s maturation process. SMWS is also known for its unique numbering system to identify its bottlings. The second number, ‘46’ in this case, refers to the cask that is being bottled.
Bottled in November 2021, this became another of the rare private cask bottlings scattered across the secondary market. Only 210 bottles were produced from this cask, making this an incredibly rare expression. Other such bottles include the Springbank Starkickers, which you can read about here.
Compass Box , founded in 2000 by John Glaser, has long been revered by blended scotch whisky lovers for its transparent approach to whisky blending and bottling. The Royal Lochnagar Selected Reserve, of course, was a popular official single malt bottling. However, in a world that continually focuses on vintage and age-statement scotch, the expression has fallen by the wayside just slightly. This list of individual bottles and then some broader ranges of spirit styles may first come across a little confusing. I’m not one for keeping bottles and hoping to turn a profit. However, some of these whiskeys and spirits are true liquid time capsules with fascinating histories and incredible flavor profiles.
As such, independent bottlings of Glenfiddich are extremely rare. Bottles such as this Glenfiddich 1956 29 Year Old for Intertrade, therefore, are highly prized. This 1956 vintage was distilled even before the single malt scotch was marketed outside of the United Kingdom. It is still family-owned and run by the Grants.
