Firstly, the popularity of blended scotch whiskies, previously high and reliable, began to decline. Increasingly, the public (both domestically and abroad) began to favour lighter spirits such as rum and vodka. Port Ellen Distillery is, after many delays, now expected to come back online in 2024. Brora reopened in 2021.

In 2024, Speyburn unveiled a brand refresh, including two new expressions: a bourbon cask and rum cask finish. Speyburn has long flown under the radar, and is not necessarily a household name amongst scotch whisky lovers the world over. In 1991, it changed ownership and became part of Inver House.

Speyburn’s higher-age statement packaging is expected to be upgraded by the end of 2024. Speyburn Bourbon Cask & Rum Finish Credit: Speyburn In celebration of this new era for Speyburn Distillery, two new whiskies have been added to the distillery’s collection. Global roll out is expected before the end of 2024.

The Glenlivet Rum & Bourbon Fusion Cask. The series’ first offering is The Glenlivet Rum & Bourbon Fusion Cask Selection which has been matured in special casks that previously held rum and bourbon. The casks were sourced from the US (bourbon) and the Caribbean (rum).

New scotch whisky releases this week include two old and rare expressions from The Last Drop and an experimental whisky from Cù Bòcan. The Glen Scotia 9 Year Old Campbeltown Malts Festival 2024 is available to purchase online and through specialist retailers for an RRP of £65 (~$81). The visitor experience is due to open in 2024.

Big Peat The Thropaigeach Edition Credit: Big Peat Douglas Laing-owned regional malt brand, Big Peat, has unveiled its Fèis Ìle limited-edition bottling for 2024. Big Peat Thropaigeach is a 48% ABV Islay blended malt which has been finished in ex-Rum casks to impart a tropical influence.
