It’s been a year (January 2024) since Plantation Rum formally rebranded as Planteray as a move to get away from the slavery connotations of its original name. However, rum is the true calling of this southern distillery. Sugarfield does most of their premium rum distillation with a copper pot still, as the spirit comes off around 165 to 170 proof. One criticism of the rum industry is the lack of transparency regarding whether or not sugar is added to the spirit before bottling.

As much as any other spirit, it’s safe to say there’s a style of rum for everyone. Some bottles are specifically produced for cocktails; others, owing to the price tags that accompany them, demand to be sipped, whether neat, on the rocks, or proofed down to the drinker’s preference. After all, there’s a style of rum for everyone.

This years Master Blender Collection is meant to offer a glimpse into how rum was made back in the 19th century when the coffey still was invented. The single batch of copper coffey still rum has aged in St Lucy, Barbados for four years in heavily charred ex-bourbon casks, bringing out rich oak and honey notes, the distillery reports.
