It is a multi-award-winning expression, having won Double Gold at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, as well as medals from the IWSC. In 2024, Speyburn unveiled a brand refresh, including two new expressions: a bourbon cask and rum cask finish. In 1991, it changed ownership and became part of Inver House.

The Arran Barrel Bonfire is the second edition in the distillery’s four-part series, which began in 2023 with Remnant Renegade. Big Peat Thropaigeach is a 48% ABV Islay blended malt which has been finished in ex-Rum casks to impart a tropical influence. Barrel Bonfire is an 11 Year Old single malt with a phenol level of 42 PPM.

However, by the 1980s, consumers had begun to favor white spirits such as white rum and vodka. This massive oversupply with decreasing demand resulted in multiple distillery closures and a general decline in the sale of scotch whisky. The bottle most recently sold in February 2023 for £3,500. Superb, very superb.

Raisins, quince jelly, very old rum. Fastforward to 2023 and one of these Springbanks sold at Sotheby’s in London for £22,500 (inc. Second go after some breathing, one hour and a half later, from the very same glass (no refill!): The mouth is still very strong: old Port, grilled beef, balsamic vinegar… even some Japanese sake!

Caol Ila Distillers Edition BUY NOW: $65 (2023 Edition) For something a little peatier, Caol Ila isn’t necessarily the first port of call for cask finishing in the Isle of Islay, but this is one of the most consistent releases I’ve tried over the years. It’s certainly worth exploring if you can get your hands on it.

The Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask Whisky is transferred into ex-rum casks. Today that’s Kelsey McKechnie, Stewart’s apprentice from 2018 until 2023. The cask used for finishing will usually have previously held a different type of spirit, wine, or other liquid. The Malt Master oversees the whole process.

Signatory , owned by Andrew Symington , is quite the pioneer in the business of independently bottled scotch. Throughout all of 2023, Signatory bottled a huge selection of indie Macallan from 2005, all priced very well for cask strength, late teenage liquids that were absolutely incredible.
