This massive oversupply with decreasing demand resulted in multiple distillery closures and a general decline in the sale of scotch whisky. The period was known as The Whisky Loch. The Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask Whisky is transferred into ex-rum casks. The cask used for finishing will usually have previously held a different type of spirit, wine, or other liquid. Sherry casks are the most common, but there are plenty of examples of other cask varieties being used.

Between 2019-2024, Nick Offerman collaborated with Lagavulin to release four Offerman Edition expressions, each 11 Years Old and bottled at 46% ABV, featuring cask finishes including Guiness, Charred Oak, and ex-Caribbean rum. A Lagavulin Offerman 2 nd Edition bottling followed in 2021, launched for the US market and distillery visitors.

Firstly, the popularity of blended scotch whiskies, previously high and reliable, began to decline. Increasingly, the public (both domestically and abroad) began to favour lighter spirits such as rum and vodka. Brora Distillery reopened in 2021. Brora reopened in 2021.
