I realized this when I sipped Eleven Eleven’s 2021 Dutton Ranch Chardonnay earlier this week. Made from dry-farmed, organically grown fruit, the wine is aged entirely in French oak barrels for 14 months before it’s bottled. And yet, there’s more to Napa Chardonnay than one-note butter bombs.
2021 Larkmead Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley – The 2020 vintage featured a blend that was 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. This is big and brutish out of the bottle, so at minimum an hour of decanting or air should be allocated to allow to get some level footing.
Today we look at a five-pack of wines all from the 2021 vintage, all of which are in current release and which are all fairly reasonable in price. 2021 Compris Wavelength Chardonnay Chehalam Mountains AVA – A juicy, moderately oaked estate chardonnay, built around notes of lemon, gooseberry, and a pinch of autumnal baking spice.
Tornatore’s Pietrarizzo Etna Bianco is not the same thing as this wine , which is bottled only under its DOC identification of Etna Bianco. The main difference (by my reading) is that Pietrarizzo spends two extra months on the lees before bottling — and in oak barrels instead of stainless steel. A point of clarity.
Two wines from Etude, which crafts bottlings from all over California — but particularly Napa Valley. 2021 Etude Pinot Gris Carneros – Etude’s pinot gris invariably offers a floral-heavy, slightly austere experience, and this 2021bottling is no exception.
Though its a budget-priced bottling, the wine pours on layers of dark, black fruit, layered with spices and a late-game apple skin quality that evokes memories of mulled wine. A- / $30 The post Review: 2021 Booker Wines Harvey & Harriet appeared first on Drinkhacker: The Insider's Guide to Good Drinking.
Before bottling, the wine was aged for nine months in French Oak. This wine was a surprise, but a welcome one, and it could be the bottle that converts fans of Cabernet and other heavy reds into lovers of Pinot Noir. La Crema produces excellent Pinot Noirs from several different regions , but their home base is in Sonoma.
Tenuta Perano’s Chianti Classico is a wine we’ve covered in numerous incarnations — including this (standard) version and the Riserva bottling. His 2021 cab-heavy blend is composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, and 6% Cabernet Franc — a heady recipe, to be sure. The wine is aged in new French oak for 18 months before bottling. The Chris in question is Chris Kenefick, the winemaker at Kenefick Ranch. Let’s give it a try.
The $60 set includes 100ml samples of three wines Los Carneros Chardonnay, Los Carneros Pinot Noir, and Fraternity Red Blend, all from the 2021 vintage. As they are also available separately, pricing below is for full 750ml bottles of each wine. A bit over the top, all around.
While Daou ‘s lineup is increasingly ubiquitous (we just bought a half bottle of Daou Chardonnay on a recent no-frills Allegiant Airlines flight), it’s still cranking out ultra high-end wines at the top end. Soul of a Lion is its most luxe offering, and we recently sampled the new 2021 vintage release.
It checks all the boxes expected of a Chardonnay of this pedigree and reputation and is certainly a bottle worthy of special occasions and guests. It’s great now, but I can’t help but wonder if another year or two in storage would see this bottle evolve to higher level.
2021 Herdade Do Esporao Reserva Red – Elegant with notes of blackberry and plum oscillating in and out with a touch of cinnamon peeking through after some rest in the glass. A- / $23 2022 Herdade Do Esporao Reserva White – Sunny and aromatic pouring out of the bottle and into the glass.
Two new releases from Sonoma-based Three Sticks, both pinot noirs from the 2021 vintage — and both very different. B+ / $95 2021 Three Sticks Pinot Noir Sonoma Mountain One Sky Vineyard – The first vineyard-designated release from One Sky. Consider aging for a few years.
The delight found in opening an unexpected bottle of wine is right up there with stumbling across a sunsetsheer ephemeral joy. In 2021, Johan released their first Savagnin varietal. Although my delight at the wine was partially owing to surprise, I’d gladly purchase another bottle knowing what to expect. $40,
2021 William Hill Estate Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast – Rich with chocolate on the nose, mellowing out with time to present aromas of black currant and baking spice courtesy of oak aging. It’s a bottle one would expect during drinks service in business class or one that could work well as a base for a nice white sangria.
Lithology 2021 is a blend of 86% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot, and 2% cabernet franc, sourced primarily from the eastern edge of Rutherford, with some Howell Mountain merlot and Oakville cab franc added to the mix. Their idea?
2021 Trapiche Medalla Malbec – Initially assertive with concentrated aromas of blackberry, raisin, and dark cherry, things eventually diminish with nuances of vanilla and toasted oak from aging in French oak barrels emerging and providing balance. Trapiche is certainly among them, maintaining its presence in the conversation year after year.
Instead, bubbles are infused into the wine during bottling. Let’s see how it plays out in the bottle. B / $35 2021 Bryn Mawr Dolcetto Estate – 100% Dolcetto. B+ / $35 The post Review: Bryn Mawr NV Brut Rose and 2021 Dolcetto appeared first on Drinkhacker: The Insider's Guide to Good Drinking.
2021 Domaine Bousquet Cameleon Organic Cabernet Sauvignon – 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Malbec, and somewhat surprisingly, that 15% stays quietly in the background and does a minimal amount of lifting. An engaging, affordable bottle that will do well with an easygoing weeknight pasta dinner. In other words: terroir.
2021 Cantina Zaccagnini Tralcetto Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC – Presenting a solid foundation of blackberry and dark cherry, this wine gains assistance from white pepper as it develops in the glass. This bottle holds promise with one to two years if stored away from sight, but it’s also ready to deliver presently if in a pinch.
A- / $48 2021 C.L. Considerably lighter in body than the 2020 bottling , the focus here leans more on strawberry and light raspberry notes than the dense currents and cherry notes of the prior vintage, with unusual secondary elements of orange peel and cardamom emerging. I did both. B / $48 clbutaud.com The post Review: C.L.
A / $40 2021 Johannes Trapl Blaufrnkisch Johannes Trapl left a perfectly good job offer at a California winery on the table to return to Austria (Carnuntum) and concentrate on making biodynamically farmed natural wines. It will be excellent in a few years, but certainly ready to drink now.
