This 15 Year Old Fine Oak Triple Cask Matured is, therefore, something of a snapshot of Macallan just prior to its luxury rebrand in 2018. The spirit initially matured in ex-bourbon before being finished in Italian Amarone wine casks.

Whilst scotch whisky can legally be matured in virgin oak casks, this is not necessarily a common practice. Most scotch whisky distilleries choose to mature in ex-bourbon or ex-sherry, with cask finishes in casks such as wine and port. It was distilled in 2008 and bottled in January 2018 as part of batch number 10.

The Samaroli Cadenhead Dumpies are also very scarce at auction, with just 47 results for the entire range since 2018, and nothing prior. And a 1964 Springbank 15 Year Old last sold for £3,245.

The whisky was matured initially in American white oak and then finished in Italian Amarone red wine casks and ‘Kintsugi’ casks. In 2018, The Macallan underwent a drastic and luxury rebrand, as did the 18 Year Olds. Taking a look at wine-searcher, I can see that the average price for a 750ml bottle of Macallan 18 Year Old 2023 is $427. US Total Wine & More – 2023 release – $409.99 Instead, the bottle displays the year of release/bottling.

But don’t take it from me, the Society has been trawling in no less than 163 awards for these extra-matured whiskies since 2018. But in recent years the balance has started to shift again towards wine and particularly sherry casks. I still believe that these casks showcase that snapshot of a day in a distillery’s history.
