Raisins, quince jelly, very old rum. In 2018, one came to auction and failed to attract any bids. Second go after some breathing, one hour and a half later, from the very same glass (no refill!): the nose gets quite similar to a very old Sauternes or a Sélection de Grains Nobles (by Zind-Humbrecht, no need to say). 98 points (record!)

Stewart looked back on the creation of DoubleWood on its 25th anniversary in 2018, telling Master of Malt: “My biggest achievement with Balvenie is certainly Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old. The Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask Whisky is transferred into ex-rum casks. The Malt Master oversees the whole process.

TL;DR Johnnie Walker Black Label Triple Cask builds on the classic Black Label by finishing in bourbon, scotch whisky, and Caribbean rum casks, adding extra complexity but dropping the 12-year age statement. Ardbeg Grooves (2018) – The Summer of Love Tribute Inspired by the cultural revolution of the 1960s, Grooves took its name from the heavily charred grooves cut into the surface of red wine casks used in maturation. We haven’t touched on the rum-influenced Drum, the dragon-charred Scorch, or the punk-inspired Ardcore.

The SMWS created a pop-up venue in Battersea, London in Autumn 2018 to celebrate the society’s 35 th anniversary – the venue remained open until July 2019. SMWS Today The SMWS now bottles around 500 casks a year, diversifying its spirit range to also include single grain, world whiskies, rum, gin, cognac, and other spirits.
