The resulting spirit was matured in a combination of four different casks: bourbon barrels, sherry casks, virgin oak casks, and Bordeaux wine casks. Benriach The Twenty One was distilled from a combination of peated and unpeated barley. Whisky from each cask type was expertly blended by Master Blender, Rachel Barrie.

In 2022, Nick Offerman combined three passions, wood, Lagavulin, and steak, to create the 3 rd Offerman Edition, Charred Oak Cask.

The 25 Year Old was added to the distillery’s core range in 2017, and previously won Best In Show Whisky at the SFWSC in 2021. The whisky is created in a similar way to the 30 Year Old.

So, when Diaego announced plans to restore Port Ellen (and Brora) in 2017, Islay whisky fans rejoiced. 1995 saw the distillery doors close and the stills become silent.

In 1840, James Rankine, a local wine merchant, purchased the Camelon maltings from Gunn & Co. In October 2017, Ian Macleod Distillers simultaneously announced the purchase of the distillery site from Scottish Canals (successor to British Waterways), and the acquisition of the Rosebank trademark and existing stocks from Diageo.

The whisky represents a first-of-its-kind maturation experiment, having been aged exclusively in French Oak barrels previously used to produce Secret de Chteau Biac, a sweet white “liquoreux” wine from the 17th-century estate. These unique casks have never before been used to mature scotch whisky.
