Another trend is that larger companies began entering the category in 2014, gaining strength in 2017, despite the category’s relatively small size. This is still at a small scale but is on the rise.

Old Elk takes its name from a whiskey brand that was intended to go into production but stopped short in the face of Prohibition. A strong name for a whiskey from Colorado where the elk population is the biggest in the United States. Metze knew his whiskey and he knew had to make good stuff at high volumes.

These new distilleries had been producing high volumes of whisky to meet the demand for blending in the 1960s. So, it was a huge surprise and relief when, in 2017, Diageo announced a £35 million plan to bring Brora and Port Ellen back online. Much of this spirit was still maturing. Brora Distillery reopened in 2021.
