The ex-bourbon, American oak backbone of so many Irish and Scotch whiskeys today really didn’t become the norm until the 1960s. Billy: Redbreast as a brand is first mentioned over 100 years ago in 1912.

The 12 Year Old Double Cask expression was launched in 2016, and the range is still available today, complete with a 15 Year Old, an 18 Year Old, and a 30 Year Old expression. The oldest official bottling of Macallan 12 Year Old single malt scotch (crucially, not whisky liqueur) that I can find was bottled by Marshall Taplow in the 1960s.

The 16 year old expression was introduced in the 1980s and has since won numerous awards including Gold at the World Whiskies Awards in the category of Islay Single Malt 13 to 20 Years in 2016. Menthol, hazelnut oil, oxtail, prunes, orange marmalade, smoked ham, curry, mustard (hints), walnut liqueur.
