Raisins, quince jelly, very old rum. One of these bottles sold in October 2015 for £3,300 at Whisky Online Auctions. Second go after some breathing, one hour and a half later, from the very same glass (no refill!): the nose gets quite similar to a very old Sauternes or a Sélection de Grains Nobles (by Zind-Humbrecht, no need to say).

Glenmorangie PLC sold the SMWS to a consortium of private investors, including the HotHouse Club and a group of financial investment managers in 2015. SMWS Today The SMWS now bottles around 500 casks a year, diversifying its spirit range to also include single grain, world whiskies, rum, gin, cognac, and other spirits.

It has all the depth and complexity of the best rum youve ever tasted, yet it hails from Scotland. From 2015 onwards, I was picking up bottles for around 100opening them, drinking them, sharing them. A little sherry-tinted light bulb switched on in my head. And so, the hunt began.

The first batch sold out within hours, leading to subsequent releases in 2010, 2014, and 2015. We haven’t touched on the rum-influenced Drum, the dragon-charred Scorch, or the punk-inspired Ardcore. This made it one of the peatiest whiskies ever released at the time. Of course, this list barely scratches the surface.
