When Grand Army opened in Brooklyn in 2015, the aim was to be a welcoming neighborhood bar that simply felt like an extension of a friend’s living room. Bartender Dillon Brown wanted to utilize as many woman-owned and made products as possible, incorporating Yola mezcal and Xila, a mezcal-based spiced liqueur.

But once upon a time, back when Dante opened in 2015, the cocktail to drink was the Garibaldi, an obscure highball made of Campari and “fluffy” orange juice and topped with an orange wedge. It’s made with bourbon, sweet vermouth, Campari, and two Japanese plum liqueurs.

Then banana flambéed, coconut… Then some high-end wine (great old Pomerol – no, not just any merlot)… Then chicory… Then lots of pineapple liqueur, Malibu, old Muscat wine. One of these bottles sold in October 2015 for £3,300 at Whisky Online Auctions. Bold, coating… Gets then quite smoky, with some mocha. Really breathtaking.
