With Bhakta, his eponymous second act in spirits, Raj has leaned into highly aged brandy, rum, blends , and bourbon. Announced in January 2024, Bhakta 2013 Straight Rye Whiskey is 10 year, 8 month-old MGP rye finished in Calvados casks (of which Bhakta’s team has seemingly plenty to choose from).

He gained experience at several hotels and private events in the banquet sector, then joined the team as a server at Arnaud’s in 2013. He transitioned to fine dining in 2012 at Brennan’s. While serving at Arnaud’s, I switched to a cocktail server position in the French 75 Bar and learned how to make the famous French 75 cocktail.

Founders Albert Peters, Edwin Pooley, and Edgar McClain began making fruit wine and brandies from the abundance of fruit in the region, taking only a brief hiatus to make industrial alcohol for the war effort. By the late 50s Hood River Distillers had begun blending and bottling spirits for distribution throughout the Pacific Northwest.

As much as any other spirit, it’s safe to say there’s a style of rum for everyone. Then there are flavored or spiced releases, which accounted for over 50 percent of the rum sold in the U.S. After all, there’s a style of rum for everyone. The nose is corny, ever so slightly grassy, and features muted raisin notes, intriguingly.

The Rum & Rhubarb seasonal (East London Rarer rum, apple mint cordial, Idyll rhubarb & meadowsweet soda) was another big hit, giving a mojito a fruity spin that evokes strawberry more than rhubarb. Slightly smoky from the malt, the pear notes prop it up and let that gooseberry-driven coconut note to shine.
