Perhaps one of the biggest losses during the 1980s Whisky Loch, Port Ellen garnered a dedicated cult following through independent bottlings and Diageo’s Annual Releases. Whilst the series was discontinued in 2005, it is still regarded highly by collectors, who have over 121 bottlings from 36 distilleries to collect.

SMWS is also known for its unique numbering system to identify its bottlings. The second number, ‘46’ in this case, refers to the cask that is being bottled.

This particular expression showcases spirit from the Port Dundas Distillery, which closed in 2011 after owner, Diageo, decided to shift focus to the grain whisky giant, Cameronbridge. UK: You can grab a bottle of Ghost & Rare Port Dundas for 260. However, those that I can find seem to be broadly positive.

This Glen Scotia whisky was distilled in 1973 and bottled in 1999, the same year that Glen Scotia reopened under Loch Lomond Distillers following two periods of closure in the 1980s and 90s. There were two versions of this bottling release: one bottled in 1996 and one bottled in 1999. The new plant continued as Clynelish.
